Malaysia’s candidate Yasmeen Muhamad Shariff has been elected as a member of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child for the 2027–2031 term, securing the highest number of votes among all successful candidates.
Yasmeen received 136 votes in the election, earning a second term on the Committee after previously serving from 2013 to 2017.
The election underscores the international community’s confidence in her extensive expertise and reflects Malaysia’s continued commitment to advancing and safeguarding the rights of children.
Serving as an independent expert in her personal capacity, Yasmeen will contribute to the Committee’s mandate of monitoring the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and promoting the protection and well-being of children worldwide.
Malaysia described the election as a recognition of its sustained efforts in championing children’s rights and strengthening international cooperation in the field of child welfare.
