Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will lead his country’s delegation to the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit in Kazan, Russian Federation, on June 17-18, marking the 35th anniversary of ASEAN-Russia diplomatic relations.
Anwar Ibrahim will be accompanied by Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Johari bin Abdul Ghani and Minister of Economy Akmal Nasrullah bin Mohd Nasir, along with officials from the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The summit, commemorating ties that began in Kuala Lumpur in 1991, will provide ASEAN and Russian leaders an opportunity to review progress over the past three-and-a-half decades and chart the future course of cooperation under the Strategic Partnership framework.
Discussions are expected to cover trade and investment, energy, food security, digital economy, science and technology, culture, education, tourism and people-to-people exchanges. Leaders are also expected to exchange views on regional and international developments.
The summit is set to adopt four outcome documents, the Kazan Declaration on the 35th Anniversary of ASEAN-Russia Relations, joint statements on energy cooperation and cultural cooperation, and the Comprehensive Plan of Action to Implement the ASEAN-Russia Strategic Partnership 2026–2030.
On the sidelines, Prime Minister Anwar is expected to hold a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, meet the Rais of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov, and engage with fellow ASEAN leaders on bilateral relations and issues of mutual concern.
Malaysia’s participation underscores its commitment to strengthening ASEAN’s external relations, promoting ASEAN Centrality, and advancing practical cooperation with Dialogue Partners amid an increasingly complex global environment.
