Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul arrived in Malaysia on Thursday for a two-day official visit, holding talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across a range of sectors.

Anutin, who is making his first visit to Malaysia since returning to office as prime minister in March, was welcomed upon arrival at Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s Bunga Raya Complex by Anwar, his wife Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, and Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

The Thai leader, accompanied by his wife Thananon Charnvirakul, received an official guard of honor before attending a formal welcoming ceremony that included the national anthems of both countries. He was later introduced to members of the Malaysian Cabinet and senior government officials before Anwar hosted a luncheon in honor of the Thai delegation.

The two prime ministers later met at the Perdana Putra Complex in Putrajaya, Malaysia’s administrative capital, where they reviewed the progress of Malaysia-Thailand relations and discussed ways to deepen cooperation in trade and investment, border connectivity, security, agriculture, tourism, education and people-to-people exchanges.

The leaders also exchanged views on regional and international issues, including matters related to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The Malaysian delegation included Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof, Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, Transport Minister Anthony Loke, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu, Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong and Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli.

Thailand’s delegation included the country’s deputy prime minister and foreign minister, as well as the ministers of transport, finance, tourism and sports, defense, agriculture and labor, along with senior government officials.

Following the bilateral meeting, the two leaders were scheduled to witness the signing and exchange of a memorandum of understanding on agricultural cooperation, reflecting both countries’ commitment to expanding collaboration in the sector.

On Friday, Anwar and Anutin are expected to jointly visit the Bukit Kayu Hitam-Sadao border crossing, where they will inaugurate a new road linking Malaysia’s Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security complex with Thailand’s Sadao CIQ complex, a project aimed at improving cross-border connectivity and facilitating trade.

Thailand remains one of Malaysia’s key trading partners. Bilateral trade reached 118.57 billion ringgit (about $28 billion) in 2025. Trade totaled 31.33 billion ringgit during the first quarter of 2026, marking an increase from the same period a year earlier, according to Malaysian officials.
