Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed the crucial role of ethical and responsible journalism in protecting democracy and ensuring the public has access to accurate and credible information amid the rapid rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and the spread of unverified digital content.

Speaking at the Malam Wartawan Malaysia MPI 2026 (Malaysia Journalists’ Night 2026), Anwar described the event as a tribute to media practitioners nationwide for their unwavering commitment to delivering truthful, balanced and public-interest journalism.

He also congratulated Sinar Harian on winning the prestigious Kajai Award, Malaysia’s highest journalism honour, describing the achievement as recognition of excellence and dedication in the profession.

Highlighting the growing challenges posed by AI and borderless digital information, the prime minister warned that misinformation and disinformation can spread rapidly across online platforms, making ethical journalism more important than ever.

“Technology should be embraced to strengthen the delivery of information, but it must never erode the human values, sound judgement and rigorous fact-checking that form the foundation of journalism,” Anwar said.

While acknowledging AI’s potential to enhance news production and information dissemination, he stressed that the technology cannot replace the ethical responsibility, editorial judgement and professional discipline of journalists.

Anwar also underscored the importance of a free and responsible media in building an informed society, strengthening democratic institutions and fostering a culture of knowledge and constructive public discourse.

He said independent journalism plays a vital role in promoting transparency, enhancing accountability and ensuring citizens have access to reliable information needed to make informed decisions.

Calling on media professionals to remain steadfast in their mission, the prime minister urged journalists to continue upholding professional ethics despite the increasingly complex information environment.

“Continue to be the voice of truth, uphold journalistic ethics and carry this responsibility with courage for the benefit of the people and the future of our nation,” he said.

Anwar’s remarks come as Malaysia’s media industry continues to adapt to rapid technological advances while striving to balance innovation with the core principles of accuracy, credibility and public trust.
