Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has defended the government’s fuel subsidy rationalisation policy, saying the country cannot continue financing blanket subsidies through mounting debt that would ultimately burden future generations.

Responding to criticism over the government’s subsidy reforms, Anwar said the key question policymakers must ask is: “Who will pay for it?” He stressed that excessive borrowing to maintain broad-based subsidies is neither responsible nor sustainable.

The prime minister said the government remains committed to protecting the majority of Malaysians through targeted subsidies while ensuring public funds are spent more efficiently.

According to him, wealthy individuals and foreigners should not continue benefiting from blanket fuel subsidies intended to support those who genuinely need assistance.

Anwar said the subsidy restructuring is part of broader fiscal reforms aimed at strengthening Malaysia’s financial position, improving governance and ensuring long-term economic sustainability.

He reiterated that the government would continue implementing people-centric measures to ease the cost of living while maintaining prudent fiscal management, arguing that difficult but necessary reforms today would help safeguard the country’s economic future.

The prime minister also urged the public to view the reforms from a long-term perspective, saying responsible economic management requires balancing immediate public needs with the nation’s financial stability.
