Malaysia Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called for stronger regional cooperation among ASEAN countries to build an energy system that is secure, affordable and sustainable.

“The energy transition is not merely a technological change, but an effort to ensure a more sustainable future,” Anwar said in a social media post on Wednesday.

He said the transition requires the courage to make decisions based on knowledge, innovation and regional cooperation.

According to Anwar, ASEAN needs to strengthen cooperation in developing a secure, affordable and sustainable energy system while accelerating the development of renewable energy.

At the same time, he said all viable options, including nuclear energy, should be assessed objectively based on the highest safety standards.

Through Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), the government is committed to ensuring a stable energy supply, driving economic growth and accelerating decarbonisation while safeguarding the environment, he said.

Anwar said he shared Malaysia’s position on the future of the region’s energy transition at the GBA-ASEAN Conference on Energy Transition and Integration.

He also expressed appreciation to renowned economist Professor Jeffrey Sachs for sharing his insightful and forward-looking views at the conference.

“May such discourse continue to strengthen our commitment to building a more prosperous, resilient and sustainable future for ASEAN,” Anwar said.
