Malaysia says its position on Myanmar remains unchanged, maintaining that ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus remains the main framework for resolving the country’s political crisis.

Speaking in Parliament, Malaysia’s foreign minister said recent developments in Myanmar have not yet resulted in meaningful progress under the regional peace plan. He said ASEAN foreign ministers continue informal engagement with Myanmar following decisions made at the recent ASEAN summit.

As part of that effort, Malaysia’s foreign minister visited Naypyitaw on May 19 and held talks with Myanmar’s new foreign minister on the country’s political situation and ASEAN’s role.

Malaysia said discussions focused on political stability, implementation of the Five-Point Consensus, inclusive dialogue and possible regional support.

Kuala Lumpur also called for the release of political detainees and raised concerns over the Rohingya refugee crisis.

Malaysia stressed that the visit should not be seen as recognition of Myanmar’s new government, but as part of efforts to keep dialogue open and encourage a peaceful resolution.

The government urged all sides in Myanmar to end violence and move toward ceasefire and inclusive talks.
