Malaysia has advised its citizens to exercise heightened caution following a series of security incidents in Thailand’s southern border provinces of Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat, where local authorities have stepped up security measures and imposed temporary curfews.

In a media advisory issued on Saturday, Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra) said it was closely monitoring developments after the incidents reported on the night of Aug 22.

The ministry said there had been no reports so far of Malaysians being affected by the violence.

It said the Malaysian Embassy in Bangkok and the Consulate General in Songkhla were maintaining close coordination with Thai authorities to track the situation and ensure the safety of Malaysian citizens in the affected areas.

Wisma Putra urged Malaysians residing in, travelling through, or planning to visit Thailand’s southern provinces to remain vigilant and comply with all safety instructions, curfews and advisories issued by local authorities.

The ministry also encouraged Malaysians abroad to register and regularly update their contact details through the e-Konsular portal to facilitate timely communication and consular assistance during emergencies.

Malaysian diplomatic missions in Thailand have activated emergency contact channels, including the embassy in Bangkok and the consulate in Songkhla, to assist citizens if needed.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates when necessary,” the statement said.

Thailand’s southern border region has long been affected by sporadic violence linked to an insurgency, prompting periodic security operations and travel advisories.
