Malaysia is strengthening cooperation with ASEAN member states and the International Labour Organization (ILO) to address emerging challenges in the labour market and promote sustainable workforce development.

Human Resources Minister Dato’ Sri Ramanan Ramakrishnan attended a luncheon held in conjunction with the 29th ASEAN Labour Ministers Meeting (ALMM) in Bangkok, hosted by Thailand.

The gathering brought together ASEAN labour ministers and provided an opportunity to strengthen regional relations and cooperation in a more informal and cordial setting.

On the sidelines of the event, Ramanan also held discussions with ILO Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo, focusing on workforce development, the future of labour markets, and efforts to strengthen workers’ protection and welfare.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to exchange views on the rapidly changing nature of employment and the need for closer cooperation between Malaysia and the ILO.

Discussions highlighted the importance of developing a workforce that is sustainable, competitive and inclusive, while ensuring workers’ welfare and protection remain key priorities.

The participation of Malaysia’s Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA) in the regional meeting reflects the country’s continued commitment to strengthening cooperation on labour issues at both the ASEAN and international levels.

The ministry said the efforts are in line with the Malaysia MADANI agenda, particularly its emphasis on well-being, with workers’ welfare, protection and future remaining among the government’s key priorities.
