Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the government is reviewing the promotion process for senior military officers to strengthen integrity, transparency and professionalism within the armed forces.

Anwar said the review aims to ensure that promotions to the highest ranks are based on merit, competence and integrity, amid the government’s broader efforts to reform the country’s defence sector following recent corruption-related investigations involving senior military officials.

He said the proposed improvements are intended to reinforce public confidence in the armed forces and prevent any abuse of power in the promotion system.

The prime minister stressed that appointments to senior military positions must uphold the highest standards of professionalism and accountability, adding that the government is committed to strengthening governance across all public institutions.

The review forms part of Malaysia’s wider institutional reform agenda, which includes enhancing transparency in defence administration and procurement to safeguard national security and public trust.
