Malaysia restores 300-litre monthly RON95 fuel quota for citizens

Malaysia will restore the monthly quota for subsidised RON95 petrol purchases by citizens to 300 litres from Sept 1, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced Sunday.

The government had earlier reduced the monthly limit to 200 litres amid a surge in global crude oil prices following the US-Israeli war on Iran.

Anwar said the higher quota was among a package of measures aimed at easing living costs and supporting Malaysians and local businesses.

The government will also restore a 400-litre monthly quota for subsidised diesel purchases by citizens, according to the announcement.

“The economic growth of the country must be returned to the people,” Anwar said in a televised address.

The measures come as Malaysia seeks to cushion households from higher living costs while maintaining economic momentum. The country’s economy grew 6% in the second quarter of 2026, exceeding official projections.

Alongside the fuel measures, the government announced additional support for schools, small businesses and young Malaysians, including free access to selected artificial intelligence applications for people aged 18 to 30.

The government will also increase funding for school maintenance, expand digital healthcare initiatives and provide greater support for micro and small businesses.

Anwar further announced that the revenue threshold for mandatory e-invoicing would be raised to businesses with annual turnover above 3 million ringgit.

He said funds recovered through anti-corruption cases would also be channelled into education and healthcare.

The measures take effect from Sept 1.
