Malaysia’s Immigration Department detained 200 people during a large-scale enforcement operation at the popular Pasar Malam Taman Maluri night market in Kuala Lumpur’s Cheras district on Sunday, officials said.

The operation began at about 6 p.m. and was led by Kuala Lumpur Immigration Director Hamzah bin Injau, with support from officers of the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

According to the Immigration Department, the raid was carried out based on intelligence gathering, surveillance and information provided by the public. Officers inspected the documents of 500 individuals, including 407 foreign nationals and 93 Malaysian citizens.

Following the inspection, authorities detained 200 people — 125 men and 75 women — on suspicion of violating Malaysia’s immigration laws. No children were among those detained.

The detainees were taken to the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Department office in Jalan Duta, where their identities and immigration documents will be verified. Those found not to have committed any immigration offences will be released, while those confirmed to have violated immigration regulations will be transferred to the Bukit Jalil Immigration Depot for further legal action.

The Immigration Department said enforcement efforts will continue not only against undocumented migrants but also against employers, business owners, individuals providing shelter and trafficking syndicates found to be facilitating immigration offences.

The department also urged members of the public to cooperate with authorities by reporting immigration-related violations to help strengthen law enforcement efforts.
