Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Friday said the biggest obstacle to the Madani Government’s reform agenda is not a lack of technology or expertise, but resistance to change, particularly from those who continue to defend a culture of corruption.

Speaking at an event in Negeri Sembilan, Anwar said his more than three years in office had shown that efforts to reform public institutions and eradicate corruption often encounter opposition from individuals who benefited from the previous system.

“The biggest challenge is not technology or knowledge. The real challenge is changing attitudes and mindsets. Many are uncomfortable when we try to correct the system because they have become accustomed to practices that lack transparency and accountability,” he said.

The prime minister stressed that strengthening governance and combating corruption may not always be popular, but are essential to building a transparent, accountable and effective public administration.

He said no system is perfect and that continuous improvements are necessary to meet the demands of good governance, justice and national development.

“Many people are unhappy when we seek to reform the system. But no system is perfect and it must always be improved. That is the demand of religion, culture and civilisation,” Anwar said.

Reaffirming the Madani Government’s commitment to institutional reforms, Anwar said integrity, accountability and transparency would remain at the core of Malaysia’s long-term development agenda.

He also urged all segments of society to support the government’s reform efforts, saying meaningful change requires a collective commitment to reject corruption and uphold ethical leadership for the benefit of future generations.
