Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has sought Malaysia’s assistance, including through PETRONAS, to help meet the country’s urgent LNG needs amid ongoing gas supply constraints according to a social media post by Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

The issue came up during a phone conversation between Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Tarique Rahman on Tuesday, during which they discussed ways to further strengthen Malaysia-Bangladesh relations, particularly in energy and investment.

“Among the key matters raised was the gas supply challenge currently faced by Bangladesh due to supply constraints, with the Prime Minister seeking Malaysia’s assistance, including through cooperation with PETRONAS, to supply LNG to help meet the country’s pressing needs,” Anwar said in the post.

The two leaders also discussed economic cooperation, including progress on investments involving Axiata and the potential for strategic collaboration with MMC Port.

Such cooperation, Anwar said, could further strengthen economic ties between the two countries and create greater opportunities for their peoples.

Malaysia, he said, remains committed to strengthening its longstanding friendship with Bangladesh based on mutual respect, pragmatic cooperation and a shared commitment to delivering benefits for the people of both countries.
