The Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur observed July Martyrs’ Day with due solemnity and respect on Thursday, bringing together members of the Bangladeshi community, community leaders, journalists and officials of the mission.

The programme began with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by the reading of messages from the President and the Prime Minister. A documentary titled July Onirban, produced by Bangladesh’s Ministry of Cultural Affairs, was also screened.

Speaking at the discussion, Bangladesh High Commissioner Monjurul Karim Khan Chowdhury said the sacrifices of those martyred during the 2024 mass uprising would remain an enduring source of inspiration in the nation’s struggle for freedom, justice and democracy.

He called upon Bangladeshis at home and abroad to uphold the spirit of July and contribute to building a discrimination-free, humane and democratic Bangladesh.

Representatives of the Bangladeshi expatriate community also addressed the programme, paying tribute to all those who lost their lives during the July mass uprising, including Abu Sayeed and Mohammad Wasim Akram.

They said the sacrifices of the martyrs had opened a new chapter in the country’s history.

The programme concluded with a special prayer seeking eternal peace for the souls of the martyrs, speedy recovery of the injured, and continued peace and prosperity for Bangladesh.
