Malaysia will strengthen defence infrastructure in Sabah amid growing geopolitical uncertainties in the region, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said.

The move comes following the recent expansion of US military facilities to Balabac Island in the Philippines’ Palawan province, which is close to Malaysian waters and Banggi Island in Sabah, according to Malaysiakini.

Anwar said the government was closely monitoring the evolving security landscape and would take necessary measures to safeguard Sabah’s security and Malaysia’s national interests.

The development reflects growing concerns in the region over increased military activity and shifting strategic dynamics involving major powers.

The prime minister’s remarks came as Malaysia faces a changing regional security environment, particularly in areas surrounding Sabah and the southern Philippines.
