Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Friday held talks with Russian Ambassador to Malaysia Naiyl M. Latypov, focusing on global geopolitical developments, international trade and ways to further strengthen Malaysia-Russia relations.

During the 30-minute courtesy call, the two exchanged views on evolving global challenges, economic trends and opportunities to expand bilateral cooperation in various sectors, according to a statement.

Ambassador Latypov thanked Mahathir for joining the World Public Assembly Conference in Moscow virtually in September last year, saying his participation had made a meaningful contribution to international dialogue.

The ambassador also shared Russia’s perspective on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and outlined the country’s efforts to strengthen domestic resilience amid global uncertainties. He said strategic investments had helped Russia emerge as a major agricultural producer, enhancing its food security and long-term economic sustainability.

Economic cooperation also featured prominently in the discussions, with Latypov highlighting Russia’s growing interest in Islamic finance. He said the initiative reflects Moscow’s efforts to broaden financial cooperation while catering to the needs of its Muslim population of around 20 million.

The two sides also recalled the long-standing defence partnership between Malaysia and Russia, including Malaysia’s acquisition of Russian-made MiG and Sukhoi fighter aircraft during Mahathir’s previous administration, which helped deepen defence cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting reaffirmed the importance of sustained dialogue and engagement in promoting mutual understanding and exploring new avenues of cooperation between Malaysia and Russia amid an increasingly complex global environment.
