Fresh US airstrikes on Iran have reignited tensions in the Middle East, dimming hopes for a lasting peace agreement as both sides exchanged attacks, raising fears of a wider regional conflict.

Iranian media reported explosions in several parts of the country, including Bandar Abbas, Sirik and the port city of Chabahar. Strikes were also reported along at least two locations on Iran’s southern Gulf coast.

Explosions were heard near Konarak and Chabahar, with power supplies reportedly disrupted in Chabahar following the attacks. Blasts were also reported in Iran’s southwestern Bushehr province.

In Bandar Abbas, at least eight explosions were heard as air defence systems were activated in response to the strikes.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Wednesday in a post on X that American forces had launched fresh strikes on Iran under the orders of President Donald Trump.

According to CENTCOM, the operation aims to weaken Iran’s military capabilities to prevent it from disrupting freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategic maritime routes.

Reacting to the attacks, Iranian Parliament spokesperson Ebrahim Rezaei warned of a strong response, writing on X that Iran’s adversaries should “prepare for a severe blow.”

Iran also launched attacks on Kuwait and Bahrain for a second consecutive day, further undermining diplomatic efforts aimed at halting the conflict. Both Gulf countries host key US military bases.

Kuwait’s Ministry of Defence said its forces intercepted Iranian missiles and drones, while Qatar briefly raised its security alert level before later lifting the heightened measures.

The latest escalation has further reduced the prospects of turning the memorandum of understanding signed on June 17 into a permanent peace agreement, according to observers.

The United Nations has expressed deep concern over the renewed hostilities, warning that the escalating conflict could derail months of diplomatic progress and trigger far-reaching consequences for regional and global stability.
