Australia has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Malaysia’s media sector by exploring closer cooperation with state broadcaster Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), with a focus on quality journalism, content sharing and the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in news production.

The commitment was highlighted during a visit by Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia Danielle Heinecke to RTM’s headquarters at Menara Angkasapuri in Kuala Lumpur, where she held talks with RTM Director-General Ashwad Ismail.

The meeting centred on expanding bilateral cooperation in media and broadcasting, including opportunities for content exchange, evolving audience news consumption patterns and the increasing influence of AI on the future of journalism.

Both sides also underscored the importance of innovation and international collaboration in helping media organisations adapt to the rapidly changing digital landscape while upholding the principles of credible, accurate and quality journalism.

The discussions reflected a shared interest in strengthening professional ties between the Australian and Malaysian media sectors and enhancing the resilience of news organisations amid rapid technological transformation.

Australia said its engagement with RTM forms part of its broader commitment to supporting a resilient, well-informed and future-ready media ecosystem in Malaysia and across the region.
