Malaysia is moving towards introducing new policy measures to address its long-standing labour shortage across various sectors, with Bangladesh emerging as a likely priority source country for foreign worker recruitment.

The Ministry of Human Resources and other relevant agencies are reviewing several proposals aimed at making the recruitment of foreign workers more efficient, transparent and demand-driven.

According to sources familiar with the discussions, giving priority to Bangladesh among labour-sending countries is one of the issues under consideration.

Employers from different industries say Bangladeshi workers have earned a strong reputation for their ability to learn quickly, work diligently, maintain discipline and demonstrate honesty. As a result, many employers continue to rank Bangladeshi workers among their preferred choices.

A leader of the China Industry Association said Bangladeshi workers are highly valued for their skills, sense of responsibility and ability to adapt quickly to industrial work environments. Demand for Bangladeshi workers is particularly increasing in the manufacturing, construction and technical sectors, he added.

Meanwhile, the government is also placing greater emphasis on recruiting technically skilled workers for future foreign labour intake. Industry insiders believe skilled manpower will become a key consideration as Malaysia seeks to meet the demands of its expanding industrial sector.

On the security front, sources linked to the Home Ministry said authorities are planning to tighten background screening for foreign workers. Particular attention will be given to preventing the recruitment of individuals involved in, or considered at risk of involvement in, drug-related offences. To achieve this, information-sharing and coordination among the relevant agencies are expected to be strengthened.

However, the Malaysian government has yet to make any official announcement regarding the proposed policy changes. Therefore, confirmation of any new recruitment policy will depend on formal government statements and directives.
