Malaysia will recruit around 200,000 Bangladeshi workers through various recruiting agencies, with the process expected to begin in September, Local Government State Minister Mir Shahe Alam said on Sunday.

The Malaysian government will also recruit another 10,000 Bangladeshi workers at no cost, he said.
The state minister made the remarks after a meeting with the Malaysian ambassador at the Secretariat in Dhaka.

During the meeting, the two sides also discussed cooperation in road construction and renewable energy.

Shahe Alam said Bangladesh has decided to use Malaysia’s rubber-mixed bitumen technology in road construction to make roads more durable. Malaysia will provide technical assistance for introducing the technology in Bangladesh.

Malaysia will also extend cooperation to Bangladesh in the renewable energy sector, he added.

Meanwhile, the state minister said rickshaws will not be allowed to operate on Dhaka’s major roads. A law in this regard has already been enacted, and the relevant rules will be finalised soon.

He said two- and four-seat e-rickshaws would be brought under registration for operation in the capital.

However, six-seat e-rickshaws will neither be allowed to operate in Dhaka nor be registered for the capital. Such vehicles will instead be eligible for registration in other urban areas outside Dhaka.
