Malaysia and Russia have agreed to expand their strategic cooperation, particularly in the energy sector, to ensure long-term energy and oil supply security.

The understanding came during a meeting between Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Russian President Vladimir Putin, where the two leaders reviewed various aspects of bilateral relations and explored ways to strengthen collaboration in key strategic sectors.

Energy cooperation featured prominently in the discussions, with both countries recognising the sector as a vital area of strategic interest. Malaysia welcomed Russia’s positive commitment to supporting long-term cooperation in energy and oil supply.

The leaders also discussed expanding economic ties and explored opportunities for joint initiatives in emerging technologies, cybersecurity, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, advanced agriculture and the pharmaceutical industry.

They further exchanged views on facilitating people-to-people movement through possible visa exemptions and enhancing bilateral trade and investment by increasing the use of local currencies, the Malaysian ringgit and Russian rouble in transactions.

According to Malaysia’s Prime Minister’s Office, the Madani government will continue pursuing strategic and proactive international partnerships to strengthen the country’s energy security.

The initiative aims to ensure a stable, sustainable and reliable energy supply while supporting Malaysia’s long-term economic growth.
