Allegations have surfaced in Malaysia over an alleged extortion syndicate targeting Bangladeshi expatriates ahead of the upcoming visit of Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, with some local BNP-affiliated activists accused of collecting money in exchange for access to official events.

While the Prime Minister’s visit has generated considerable enthusiasm among the Bangladeshi community in Malaysia, the allegations have sparked widespread discussion on social media and among expatriates.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to visit Malaysia on June 21 and 22 at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The visit has created significant interest among Bangladeshis living in the Southeast Asian nation.

According to the allegations, some individuals are demanding up to 2,000 Malaysian ringgit along with copies of passports from expatriates, promising them opportunities to attend programmes and stay close to the Prime Minister during his engagements. The amount is equivalent to more than Tk 60,000.

The allegations have been directed at a section of the Malaysia BNP leadership. Complainants claimed that some individuals, who had previously been involved in controversial activities, have become active again ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit. In particular, supporters of Malaysia BNP leader Badrul Rahman Khan have been accused of involvement in the alleged activities.

A section of expatriates has called for an investigation and necessary action if any money has been collected in the name of participation in any official or party programme.

Security analysts, meanwhile, said that maximum caution should be exercised in preparing participant lists and ensuring security arrangements during high-profile state visits abroad.

They also stressed the importance of complying with Malaysia’s local laws and regulations.
